RCGP RSS News FeedRoutine GP services, seven days a week, only wanted by small proportion of patients, says RCGP
"It’s now time to move on and ensure that our routine and out of hours services, are properly resourced, and better integrated, so that we can deliver the care our patients do want, when they need it.
"We were pleased that following pressure from the College, the current Government's manifesto scaled down demands for routine GP services, 8-8, seven days a week. Its proposals are now more in line with NHS England's GP Forward View, that extended services should be tailored to local patient demand.
"Our patients can always access urgent GP care if they need to, through our routine five day service, and the GP out of hours service. We do need better integration between the two, and better public awareness of the services available to them.
“We look forward to working with the Government to deliver our own manifesto Six Steps for Safer General Practice . First and foremost, the GP Forward View, including £2.4bn extra every year and 5,000 more GPs by 2020, must be delivered in full and as a matter of urgency. This way we can offer the robust and safe general practice service that our patients need and deserve."
